I grew up on a sheep farm in Central Otago, and studied medicene at University of Otago and Wellington. In 2005 I completed a diploma of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Nelson Hospital. Since 2009 I have worked as a GP here in Nelson. I have delivered many babies and Reproductive Medicene is still one of my current areas of interest. My other special interests include family medicine, women’s health, male and female sexual health, youth health and LGBT issues. I also work as a forensic medical examiner, and as doctor at Sexual Health Clinic Richmond and at INP Medical Practice. Through this work I have a large amount of experience in contraception, fertility and menopause. I also enjoy travel medicine and in 2011 and 2012 Claire did volunteer work in remote islands in Vanuatu. Currently I am on maternity leave with my second child. I am a keen cyclist, commuting with my family as well as mountain biking. I also enjoy gardening and spending time with family.
I grew up in Australia and completed my medical training in Tasmania. In 2005 My Kiwi husband Tom enticed me to spend time in Nelson where he had a job, and we decided to move here permanently. I undertook house surgeon training at Nelson Hospital and have worked as a GP for the last 10 years. In 2013 our family spent three months in the Himalayas doing volunteer medical work in Bhutan's capital Thimphu. When we returned to Nelson I completed post graduate studies in Immigrant and Refugee Medicine (Otago University). I remain deeply committed to improving the health of refugees who resettle in New Zealand. My other areas of interest include children and women's health, older person's health, palliative care and minor skin surgery. Whenever we get the opportunity we take our three kids tramping in the New Zealand mountains.
I am a Nelsonian but lived elsewhere for a number of years. I returned to Nelson when our children were young so our family could enjoy what this area has to offer. My nursing experience has been varied and interesting – medical, surgical, small rural hospital, rural Australia, community, occupational health, elder care. Practice Nursing encompasses everything I enjoy and utilises my interest in family care and continuity of care. My special interests and skills include chronic health conditions, eczema, sexual health and respiratory, including spirometry.
